Location: Dundee
County: Fond du Lac

Details of Incident:
Three of us, Tim H., Heidi H. and myself were skywatching on
Dundee Mountain. Suddenly at 8:55 pm, Heidi spotted a very bright object
due east. It was a bright white ball with an orange tail that tapered to
a point. The tail didn't change shape or length, but stayed completely
still behind the object, almost as if it were part of the object. The
object appeared to be very close, and the white ball that formed the
head of the object was about the size of a dime held at arm's length. It
appeared to be only about 50 to 100 yards above the treetops. It moved
very quickly from due east moving from our right to our left, and
disappeared when it was north-northeast from us. The entire sighting
lasted only about 5 seconds. It did not change course, velocity or
altitude during this time.
Tim had two cameras and one video camera on tripods at the time, but
they were all pointed to the southern sky. During the event, Heidi
attempted to swing the video camera around to face the object, but I
haven't seen the video so I'm not sure if she was successful. It would
have been very difficult given the speed of the object.
I've been trying to find out if this could match the appearance of a
natural celestial event. I know the Perseid Meteor Shower was happening
from August 13-22, but the meteors I've seen have looked more like
shooting stars. This object was much closer and much bigger. The comets
I've seen have had tails that flow outward, not that taper to a neat
point. The other explanation I've been presented with was that it was
"space junk" re-entering the atmosphere. I'm wondering if anyone else
has other explanations. If you do, please let UFO Wisconsinknow.
Thanks,
Jim
