UFOs? Area man says 'they're back'

A Dundee area man who heads what some people might call a UFO "station" says he knows several people who claim they've been abducted by aliens.

Bill Benson, 50, owner of Benson's Hideaway at Long Lake, says recent sightings of "unidentified flying objects" in Wisconsin are not surprising to him

"I just figured, well, they're here again," he said.

For the past three years, amateur astronomers and UFO buffs have gathered to share their experiences at the annual "UFO Daze" during the third weekend in July at Benson's Hideaway.

The event draws some 300 people from all walks of life, including doctors, lawyers, hypnotists, and psychiatrists, Benson said.

"They come from around the state, Milwaukee and Illinois," he said.

"We have a great time with it. People share things they wouldn't ordinarily share with the media, police or other people, because people would cast a bad light on them," Benson said.

Benson first became interested in astronomy in Vietnam while serving guard duty.

"I saw a strange orange light dancing off in right angles, flashing quickly, twisting and moving around rapidly. There's no way it could have been aurora borealis," he said.

From that point on, Benson has been on the watch for UFOs. In the past 20 years, he's seen several UFOs in the Campbellsport area.

Benson said one visitor to the UFO Daze weekend claimed that aliens hijacked his car for two hours in Vermont in the late 1970s.

"He has flashbacks of being in the car with this being, and of seeing a ship in the back of the car where his buddy was taken," Benson said. "Somehow they (the man and his companion) lost two hours in Vermont and they can't explain it any other way."

Benson said he's met two Fox Valley women who say they're abducted several times a week by aliens.

"They say that aliens can kidnap you and bring you back before you left, because their speed of time is so different than ours. Ten minutes seems like 10 hours," Benson said.

Speaking of the two women, he added, "They have adult children who think they fell off the wacky tree."
