Halloween marks the 64th anniversary of the Broadcast of War of the Worlds by H.G. Welles. On Halloween night at 8:00 PM, the Mercury Theatre broadcast this classic radio drama by Orson Welles. Orson Wells was born here, in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

The broadcast started off by stating that the Mercury Theatre was doing an adaptation of H.G. Wells War of the Worlds"

"And now, the Mercurial Theatre of the Air presents a dramatic performance of The War of the Worlds, based on the work by Orson Welles, based on the work by H. G. Welles."

Unfortunately most listeners were listening to another broadcast, the Charlie McCarthy Show; when a less than worthy singer was announced the listeners changed the channels to find this statement:

"Ladies and gentlemen, we interrupt this program to bring you this special announcement. Several observatories have made observations that indicate that several explosions have occurred on the surface of the planet Mars. In a few moments, we'll have a live report from the D. W. Griffith Observatory. And now, back to our after dinner music."

From this moment on, listeners were starting to get caught up in the drama, despite the fact that the Announcer mentioned at least three times during the entire broadcast that this was a fictitious drama based on H.G. Welles novel.

This radio drama caused mass hysteria among 1 million American people, some of whom tried to take their own lives instead of being burnt to death by the Martians.

Halloween Treat

For as long as I can remember, there have been kids coming to our door every Halloween night dressed up as their favorite ghost, ghoul, princess, or pop culture icon. Though the tradition we see in America as celebrating Halloween, a day of spooks and candy, has only begun in the Normal Rockwell era of the 1950�s in its current tradition of trick-or-treating. The idea of Halloween is indeed much older, more valued and representative of what is the true spirit that is being celebrated with only small hints to its current costume. The make over of Samhain, in many pagan communities is pretty well known. It is a time for reuniting with our ancestors who have passed on, and to recognize the year that has come to pass so that we may begin again. The New Year, is indeed born with the moon and season, it isn�t all about candy and ghosts. Nor is it not about these things, the candy represents food set out for the dead, a way of giving thanks and receiving the blessings of those who have visited our door. The ghosts, who are spirits entering into our awareness are simply more visible at this time as we turn our thoughts inwards to the spirit realms and to those we have lost. Like the drifting leaves on the trees, there is nature�s resemblance to time and to cycles that help us come to terms with the different aspects we face daily. If we care to recognize the holidays, Samhain or Halloween must be among them.

With Yule (Winter Solstice or even Christmas) we feel a sense of deep rebirth and renewal as light comes again from the shadows, it is a seasonal treat that allows us to pay attention to the days that grow longer through even the deepest of snows and blanket of the earth�s resting period. As we approach Imbolc (February 1st) the first flowers begin to yawn and approach us with a sense of cleansing the house and hearth for spring. When spring does come in March, we are able to watch the last days of snows and frost leave behind a fresh new season ready for planting and growing. There is a rebirth within the frozen land, into bloom and though we draw upon the last of our reserves in nature�s world we also look ahead to that new blooming hope in our gardens. We pass a time of love in Beltane and new birth, with the fires lit in another festival. Blessing us with the fruitation of the summer months, Lammas or Summer Solstice breaks with warm, lazy days that only begin to shorten into shadows as the light retreats into harvest time. It is said the King has given sacrifice, and must pass onto the season for that is the way of the dance of life. We meet August 1st with some sense of looking to the year that is nearing to full; this is Lughnasa a festival for the first of the harvest time. Mabon and the Autumnal Equinox lets us clear our harvest in bounty and thanks, it is when the leaves begin to turn. Deeper into the cycle of life we have passed, from new youth to adolescence and to adulthood and finally we come into the autumn of our days. The time of wisdom and reflection, days shortening into a solitude of stained-glass pools and of dark dreary skies. It is when we face our mortality, and only through such can we advance again to rebirth and pay honor through all our sacrifice and joys. Respecting the culmination of all that has come and gone, when we can talk with those we love and are nearer to the spirit that resides in the earth and within nature. We have taken nourishment from all these seasons to approach a gateway where Samhain, All Hallows Eve, awaits our arrival.

So it is for which this time we truly need, to communicate with the deeper aspect of life and the Otherworlds. The meaning of Samhain or Halloween has been ever present in time; it would exist even if it were not celebrated. It is a time when the fires are lit, chasing shadows and a time of coming to find ourselves within the ancestral heritage we have born from within. It follows the cycle of the elements all around us, changing forms but is never completely lost. It is associated with being a fright night, and the rush of joy people assume in becoming one with the spirits and playing pranks or dressing up is often taken at that face value. It is neither demonic nor is it purely angelic. It is many things, many cultural traditions blending to confide in the cycle of life, death, and rebirth. There must be dark even within the light, and the turning of the wheel changes by whatever name you call it. By shunning it from our celebrations we ignore the value of centuries of wisdom following within us, we ignore the cycle of our own bodily seasons, and the many faces it represents.

Halloween is a time for the deepest of reflections, and though you may get a scare from this widely popular holiday- it too has been transformed. We take the fright out of death by changing it, and often in these times people enjoy getting a rise out of a good horror movie almost synonymous with Halloween. So think what it means to you, ignoring all the pop culture artifice, and bring closer the ancestors and the earth and prepare to lay the year to rest with the honor and respect that has filled your life with invaluable gifts.

May the road rise up underneath you and lead you straight down the path of destiny.

Ghosts at Ground Zero?

Just this past month I visited the area where the great World Trade Center Towers once stood. I was in town with my sister to tape a television show, and the only way my sister would confirm to join me was to be sure to include seeing what is now more known as Ground Zero. I didn't make it a priority to visit the area when I had the chance to earlier this year while taping yet another show.

For what I'm sure is a common reason, I thought it might be too devastating for me to take in the site of the tumbled towers. But unlike most others, I also had a paranormal reason for my reluctance to go to the area. I suppose one could say that at times I can be quite sensitive to people and places of high emotion. Call those "feelings" a gift or a curse, either way, I doubted many could look at the ruins without feeling some kind of pain.

Anyway, I figured I'd seen enough of the photos of horror and facts of the devastation that I now knew all too well. But on this trip, it wasn't only about me and where I wanted to go. I had already agreed to venture off with my sister and see if we could indeed find our way around New York via the subway to the infamous Ground Zero.

The subways were way too hot, and the people were almost too much in a hurry, but we did finally find a friendly face to point us onto the right train and destined station to get off at. Once there we were told "Up the stairs and down a few blocks," and then escorted to the very area by the "friendly face."

My sister and I chatted a little with our new friend who looked nearly Arabic and spoke of the discriminative nature of strangers and friends since that day of 9-11-01. We walked on, when I choked.

"What's that taste in the air?" I wondered.

I suddenly saw lots of stands where people sold trinkets and souvenirs, all around one of New York's oldest churches. Our attention was so distracted and our New York friend had stopped talking as we let our feet take us towards the bustling crowd across the street.

Then I saw them.

There were high, connecting black bars that made a fence around the church that housed a very decrepit looking cemetery. I could barely see the headstones due to this mass of clothing that hung from the bars. My sister and I stopped motionless and looked up at the tattered and stained clothes when finally our escort spoke up, "Those are the clothes that were found in the rubble from the victims."

I reached up and touched a piece of the clothing and quickly let it go. "Peace had come to this person, they were okay." I somehow felt inside.

We then asked where the towers were, when our friend points across the street from where we came. We were so drawn by the flashy "goings-on" we hadn't even realize we passed up the actual towers. We were directly in front of where the towers once stood, and here of all things, was one of New York's oldest graveyards.

"That taste in the air, that's all of the towers and the people combined in this horror of ash." I thought to myself. It gave me chills to think about this as we walked over to the lookout spot to see the foundation of the towers.

Around the block and to the side we walked, and as we did, I felt something. Lots of "something."

There was a presence of, "yes an atrocity had taken place here, and it will have always been here in this very spot." There was no way to erase the physically invisible stain on the planet. Many lost their lives here, in this one little concentrated spot. Perhaps one of the smallest radiuses of space to have housed so many simultaneous-departing souls.

Ever walk into a house knowing that someone had died there recently, and imagined if it were your home you could never live there? Many people have died in their homes and many of the dead still live in their homes along with the living.

Now imagine the possibility that there were maybe a handful of those lost in the tower tragedy that were confused in their transition to the afterlife. Do you think perhaps they might hang around the area as its been noted to happen in countless cases of haunted houses?

Yes, I said "haunted." That doesn't have to be thought of as a horrendous word, but it is a word that indicates a passed soul continuing to be active amongst the living. What happened to the towers was a terrible thing, and all of the victims didn't feel (to me) to be all at rest.

If there is even one spirit there that is un-restful, do you think it's wise to rebuild anything on the ashes of so many dead?

A better way to view this: Try hunting for a plot of land and settle on a cemetery. Brush away the headstones and clean up as much as you can of the people who once rested there and try to get cozy.

History tells us that the dead, no matter how content you want to view them, are not usually quiet if their bones are disturbed where they lay. Even ancient cultures were careful not to anger their dead and made great effort to not disturb them or give the dead any reason to bother them either.

When I gazed down at the pit of the World Trade Centers, I felt a rise and a presence of "something" there. People say that this place was number one in the world where money got transferred from one point to another. But I think what they fail to see is that this is also the number one place in the world of soul transference. A lot of doors had to be opened to let all of the tower victims pass into the afterlife they fashioned, let's just hope all of those doors closed.
